SARAH WALK UNRAVEL

Following single ‘What Do I Want?’ in which Sarah Walk fully embraced her queer identity, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter shares another riveting work, ‘Unravel’. Both of these recent tracks will feature on Walk’s upcoming sophomore album, Another Me, which makes the point that experiences for women exist outside of their romantic relationships, although this narrative is often denied within music and other creative artforms. New single ‘Unravel’ acts as a sharp end of that point. It’s a cold hard look at the institutionalised entitlement of men and the motions of misogyny that are inflicted upon women. Walk’s unflinchingly serious performance in the music video further emphasise her direct address with lyrics like, “Nothing’s hurt me more than men that grew up with no consequences / Why is it my job to fix this mess? / You’re always ready to defend / You hear my concern as anger / And no-one wants an angry woman.” It’s a powerful song over bracing indie-pop melodies and a cinematic build up of energy, that settles back into solemn consideration following the cathartic explosion of Walk’s honesty. - Hannah Thacker
